Metro Gran Vía: Our bike rental and bike tour shop in Madrid is located in the city centre, close to the metro stations "Sevilla" and "Sol". We are happy that the third metro station near to us - GRAN VÍA - will reopen on July 16th after more then 1.000 days of closure and modernisation work. Metro Gran Vía station, formerly "Red de San Luis", was one of the first eight stations of the Madrid Metro on its inauguration in October 1919. During Franco’s time it received the name of "José Antonio", and, in 1984 it was called again "Gran Vía". The moderanisation has been carried out to create a direct indoor connection to Sol commuter rail station. The new Metro Gran Vía is equipped with the most modern facilities of the entire underground network, and with an exterior that reproduces Antonio Palacios' iconic pavilion between Calle Montera and Gran Vía. The original structure was reproduced as faithfully as possible, with the goal of reinstating the symbolic value of this temple of the San Luis Network. The acting president of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, declared “More than 1,000 days of waiting may seem like a lot, but when citizens see the result and in full swing they will know that it has been worth it “ The work that has been undertaken allows the Metro Gran Via and Sol stations to be connected by a corridor, so that it is not necessary to leave the stations to make the transfer. It is expected that with the new connection between Metro Gran Vía and Sol station the number of travelers will reach 66,000 per day, specifically the 44,000 daily users that this station already hosted, plus 22,000 which will be increased with the underground pedestrian connection with Cercanías
