Feel the vibes of Ronaldo & Co

As well as its bustling nightlife and its fascinating arts and culture scene, Madrid is also famous for its football stadium and the history of the Real Madrid Football Club. So, this bike tour is ideal if you are a football fan and want to get to know Madrid at the same time – we will be cycling around the city, and visiting the most popular football stadium in Spain: Santiago Bernabéu, Real Madrid’s Club de Fútbol!

According to a study from 2014, the Real Madrid Club has the highest number of fans in Spain: 32% of all fans are “Madridistas”. The next most popular club is FC Barcelona, with 24.7% of football fans. It’s safe to say that if there’s a match between Real Madrid and Barça, almost the entire nation is tuned in to their TV or radio, and the bars are full of people watching “El Clásico” – the match between the two rivals. Just a little tip: don’t organise any special meals out or other events when these football matches are taking place!

Real Madrid Bike Tour - Trixi.com Your visit to the Santiago Bernabéu is self-guided, and includes a panoramic view of the stadium. There, you will have the opportunity to almost touch the sky and listen to the echo of 80,000 fans. You will be taken through the team’s history in the ‘Best Club in History’ room which features a huge collection of items and trophies. You’ll also go through the ‘Sensaciones’ room, where your favourite players are featured on a huge screen, you can take a peek into the changing rooms, and much more.

Let’s begin!

If you want to feel the vibes of the stadium and be a real Madridista, this is your tour! We’ll start from our shop in C/ de los Jardines 12, in the heart of the city.

From here we will guide you to the Plaza de Pedro Zerolo in the Chueca district, the most liberal area of Madrid. Pedro Zerolo was a Socialist politician and gay rights activist who helped get same-sex marriage approved in Spain in 2005. Fun fact: this plaza has changed its name various times before – it was Plaza de Bilbao and later Plaza de Ruiz Zorrilla.

From here we will head to Plaza de Santa Barbara, in the ‘La Justicia’ (justice) district, so named as it was formerly home to the courts and tribunals. Apparently the name Santa Barbara comes from the convent that was located there before.

Have you ever stopped to think what the Madrid Metro was like in the past? Thanks to the “Andén 0 Project” (Metro Museo Chamberí) which we will next visit, you can travel back in time and get quite a realistic feel for what the metro was like all those years ago: the walls, arches and advertising panels, as well as the furniture and original platforms, have been fully restored to how they were in 1919.

As we are already in the Chamberi area, an elegant residential district, we will pass some of its many points of interest, like the house that belonged to the painter Sorolla, and Chamberi’s infamous market. Opened in 1943, this traditional market has been in operation for almost 80 years, and has become one of the best known in Madrid, thanks to the quality and variety of products and services it offers.

And now it’s finally time to head to the highlight of the tour – the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium! Real Madrid Bike Tour - Trixi.com

“Real Madrid is the most important thing that happened to me, both as a footballer and as a person” (Zinedine Zidane)

The stadium has seen some of the most famous and internationally-celebrated football players, such as Puskas, di Stefano, Breitner, Zinedine Zidane, Iker Casillas, Raul, Figo, Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo. Can you believe that Ronaldo holds the highest goal score record for the team, with 451 goals, followed by Raul with 323 goals? Impressive!

The Madrid Football Club was founded on the 6th of March 1902, and in 1920, King Alfonso the XIII gave it the title ‘Real’, which means Royal. From the beginning, the shirts have always been white, which is why people gave the club and its players nicknames like Los Blancos (The Whites), Los Merengues (The Meringues), Los Vikingos (The Vikings), or La Casa Blanca (The White House).

You now have one hour to enjoy the stadium by yourself. Audioguides are available at the entrance.

You’ll come out of the stadium suitably impressed after your tour of the stadium, but you’ll be faced with quite a contrast – the Picasso Tower. From its name you would expect a traditional building, but this is not the case; with its 45 rectangular floors, the Picasso Tower was the tallest building in Madrid until the construction of the Four Towers in the business district in 2008, and today it is one of the most emblematic buildings in the city. Designed by Minoru Yamasaki (the American architect of Japanese origins, who also designed the now gone World Trade Center in New York), the Picasso Tower is home to offices, designed with the latest technology and comfort in mind.

Real Madrid Bike Tour - Trixi.com We will now cycle back towards Madrid city centre. The long white buildings that you will see on the Paseo de la Castellana are called ‘Nuevos Ministerios’, or ministries, and currently house the government departments of Development and Employment, Immigration, and Social Security.

Next, as a change from modern buildings, we will pass the impressive National Museum of Natural Sciences, which is one of the most important institutes in the country for scientific research around natural sciences. The current museum was first created by King Carlos III in 1771, as the Royal Cabinet of Natural History.

As you’ll notice, Madrid is full of museums, but this next one is really different. The Castellana Open Air Sculpture Museum, located under the overpass that joins Juan Bravo and Eduardo Dato streets, boasts an excellent collection of Spanish abstract sculpture. The whole building is unique – the bridge, accesses, pedestrian crossings etc. form one whole unit, into which the sculptures exhibited are perfectly integrated.

After a cycle through the chic and glamorous Salamanca district, with its designer shops and elegant streets, we’ll reach the Statue of Columbus, a monument dedicated to the man who discovered America. At 17 metres tall, it presides over the Plaza de Colón, at the centre of an island between the streets of Paseo de Recoletos, Paseo de la Castellana, Génova and Serrano.

After passing the National Archaeological Museum of Spain (which features a wealth of exhibits from Spain and beyond, all housed in a stunning Neoclassical building), we leave the museums behind and will soon arrive at the most beautiful park in Madrid, Retiro Park. Once we get there you’ll see the Alcala Gate, one of Madrid’s iconic monuments – erected in 1778 by Italian architect Francesco Sabatini, this triumphant gate was once the main entrance to the city. Real Madrid Bike Tour - Trixi.com

Covering over 125 hectares and comprising more than 15,000 trees, El Retiro Park is a green oasis in the heart of the city. Within, you’ll find all kinds of interesting monuments and gardens, including the Jardín de Vivaces, the Jardines de Cecilio Rodríguez, the Fallen Angel statue, the Jardines del Arquitecto Herrero Palacios, the Rosaleda rose garden and the Parterre Francés, which is home to a Mexican conifer that’s nearly 400 years old (and is believed to be Madrid’s oldest tree).

In addition to its role as one of the city’s green lungs, it is also a popular spot among Madrileños to go for a walk, play some sport, visit an exhibition, or take the kids to a show – or, to simply relax in the shade when the sun is shining.

What’s more, the park boasts a large artificial lake (where you can also rent a rowing boat and spend some time floating under the sun!), plus exhibition halls like the majestic Velázquez Palace and the Glass Palace. The latter is a beautiful glass pavilion built in 1887 to house exotic plants for the Philippines Exhibition, and is one the finest examples of cast-iron architecture in Spain.

Last but not least, before we finish our tour we will see the Plaza de Cibeles, which is arguably the most famous square in Madrid. It is a complex made up of various marble sculptures and fountains, flanked by beautifully impressive buildings. The main fountain, depicting the goddess Cybele, is where the Real Madrid team celebrates its victories. It is also the place chosen for other sports celebrations, such as those of Spanish soccer and basketball teams.

And now, after a great few hours exploring Madrid and getting into the Madridista spirit, it’s time to make our way back to the shop!

This bike tour can be booked in several languages and starts from our shop in C/ de los Jardines 12, in the heart of the city near Puerta del Sol.
